(DETROIT, MI) February 12, 2013 – Muslims for Progressive Values (MVP) and KICK – The Agency for LGBT African Americans are collaborating to host The Queer Muslim Gathering, a Friday greet-and-meet and a Saturday all-day workshop for LGBT Muslim men and women. The guests encouraged to attend are from various ethnic and cultural backgrounds of Metro Detroit’s Middle Eastern, African-American, Southeast Asian, latino and white communities. The goal is to bring diverse groups together under one roof and provide MPV materials in helping Southeast Michigan LGBT Muslims become better educated about being LGBT and Muslim.
“Muslims for Progressive Values has been a strong supporter of LGBTQ rights and we feel it is important for LGBT Muslims to be included as equals into the straight Muslim society,” states Imam Daayiee director of MPV’s LGBT Outreach. “Our effort is to empower them, to educate them on their Islamic rights, to debunk homophobic theories that is passed on as ‘truth’.”
Spearheading this initiative is Imam Daayiee Abdullah and Curtis Lipscomb, executive director of KICK, an African-American. This one-day gathering will provide education and advocacy to the diversity of Muslims in Metro Detroit’s Middle Eastern, African-American, Southeast Asian, latino and white LGBT Muslim communities. “At MPV’s Unity Mosques, they promote an egalitarian Islam where all are welcome regardless of race, denomination or sexual orientation,” states Curtis Lipscomb. “We are confidently believe that in the next 20 years, this Islam will be the norm in America.”
Topics covered will include the Quran and Homosexuality, “Keep It Halaal,” and “How to Develop Inclusive Prayer Spaces.” MPV has been hosting workshops across the US, Canada and now Europe. Anyone interested in attending, should contact Imam Daayiee at firstname.lastname@example.org or KICK at (313) 285-9733 to register. We are limited to 45 people for this event. Food and refreshments will be provided.
